MEADVILLE TRIBUNE
CONNEAUT LAKE -- Lawyers, accountants and surveyors are beginning their work in the next step of development of a long-range plan for the future of Conneaut Lake Park.
Contracts were awarded by Progress of Alliance to Porter Consulting Engineers for survey work for $61,700; to Agresti, Morton and Moore of Erie, attorneys for legal work at a fee of $47,300; and to McGill, Power and Bell for $35,000 for financial work.
The trio of contracts was awarded as part of a state grant to do various aspects of research of the local 114-year-old amusement park, which has been declared a charitable trust.
Mary Ann Martin of Crawford County Development Corp., who is handling the grant on behalf of the alliance, said Monday that contracts were negotiated to meet the money available with the approval of the grant agency.
"The attorneys were out there last week," she said. They are charged with reviewing the deeds, leases and other legal agreements and making certain all are up to date.
Once that work is complete, the engineering firm can do the formal surveys needed for the plan.
The accounting aspect will involve reviewing all the accounting at the park and determining the financial picture.
Deadline for completion of the work is Aug. 31, but Martin said there is an ability to expand the deadline, if necessary.
She expressed appreciation for the enthusiasm of those involved and said they are anxious to get the work done.
"Everybody is working together", she said.
LeRoy Stearns, court-appointed overseer of the park, said the work is the "next step in the development of the park." Once the reports are complete, they can be incorporated into the plans, which include selling the portion of the park where the former Flynn House once stood.
By selling that land, Stearns plans to pay off the estimated $1.9 million debt, which will allow the park to proceed with proposals for development and leases.
In the meantime, the park will be open Wednesday from 6 to 10pm for area residents to park free of charge and enjoy the rides without cost.
It's a way to show appreciation to the community for the support it has shown the park this year, said Stearns.
Conneaut Lake Park fell under court management when the original board dwindled to one member.
Membership fell when one board member sued the rest over and agreement they had made with the former owner and operator.
In the meantime, the park has been ruled to be a charitable trust and must have court approval and approval by the state attorney general's office for all sales
