NEW LOCAL: Stearns' role as Conneaut Lake Park custodian to end in 30 days

LeRoy Stearns, court-appointed overseer of Conneaut Lake Park, has been granted permission to resign, but not for 30 days, according to a ruling made by Crawford County Court of Common Pleas Judge Anthony Vardaro.

The decision came at the end of today’s scheduled court hearing on Stearns’ petition to dissolve the custodianship.

Vardaro agreed to end the custodianship of the 115-year-old amusement park, but denied another petition filed by attorney Dana Watson to continue the overseer position for 90 days. Instead, Vardaro said he will appoint a new board of directors for the Trustees of Conneaut Lake Park on July 6. That group will then have authorization to operate the park.

Anybody interested in a trustee position must send a resume to his office at the Crawford County Courthouse so Vardaro receives it by 4:30 p.m. June 22. He then will conduct interviews of applicants.

The park has not opened for the 2007 season, but numerous efforts are still being conducted to try to have the park opened before the end of summer.

Hopefully Judge Vardaro will choose his new board carefully. From my internet research the judge was re-elected in 2001 for a 10 year term and so in a few short years he will be again asking voters for their support to keep his $150k position. By then CLP will be either healthy or just a memory replaced by condos. I truely hope it is the first rather than the latter option and I bet the Judge hopes so too because I don't think he wants to have the title as the Judge that liqudated CLP.

Speaking of the new board, it struck me funny that the canidate list in the Meadville paper did not include a represenative from either the Conneaut Lake historical society or the Conneaut Lake institute or both!!! The board needs a voice from the historical viewpoint too not just represenatives from the business community!

Another thing that struck me funny in recent events, I am wondering why Dana Watson proposed today to continue work on the Economic Alliance Park disaster plan that encourages commercial development when he was the one who objected to selling the land for condos.

And finally one last thought, we all have disagreed with Leroy and his actions over his term. But what I just can't understand is why in the heck was so much time wasted on this land sale that the judge nixed. Surely the judge knew the land sale path that Leroy was pursuing, why didn't the judge intervene months ago if the wording in the trust prevented the sale and not waste time. Same thing with the master plan thing, if they did not like what Mark Turner was doing why in the heck did they wait until it was done to reject it and decide to bring in an amusement park consultant. Politics!! So much time, efforts and money wasted.

Just some thoughts.
