Leroy did an about face and is now behind the Economic Progress plan and will ask the judge to be relieved of his duties and appoint a board of 5 or 7 people to oversee the operations of Conneaut Lake Park:

Hmm sounds like Leroy is positioning himself for a future political postion. Not sure whether to be glad he is stepping down or not. But it was clearly evident from recent events and meetings that there was way too many chiefs involved in the Park's future. I do like the idea of a 5 - 7 member community member board to oversee the Park, I like the idea of hiring a CEO or whatever title you want to call it to actually run it. Hopefully they will find someone with amusement park management experience. I'm not too sure about farming out all of the business entities to private development. But that might be the solution to getting the season start up money.
Has anyone heard did the Summit Twp supervisors ever meet about the little zoning issue that was holding up the 3.3 acre sale? While they are at it, why don't they just pass a resolution to forgive the back taxes owed by the Park to the twp in a goodwill gesture for the community. It is not like the township won't be receiving tons of new tax money on the proposed condos in the Park plus the Snow Waters development. Maybe if Summit took the lead then Sadsbury twp would do the same if the Park owes taxes to them too and the debt will be reduced some. The community NEEDS Conneaut Lake Park. Volunteers and the business community have stepped up over the years and knocked themselves out to help, its time for local government to do the same! |

| Leroy is running for county commissioner, so that may have something to do with it. I really think he wants to see the Park succeed, and I think his heart is in the right place, sometimes I not too sure where his head is at....btw, the plan and all associated maps (Cappy, you'll be interested in those) are available at http://www.economicprogressalliance.com/CLP.htm |

Well my grandpa says he wants to apply to get on the board. He said things need changing and no one is doing it. He is someone who is not afraid to get out and talk with people unlike deshner. I hope he gets on. _________________ 2010 Cedar Point - Ripcord Site Controller |

Thanks for the link jimmyt...
I admit i haven't had time to read through all of the documents from this "master plan" but i'm not impressed with what I've seen so far. Labelling zones with extremely general terms like "Recreation" and "Entertainment" make me wonder exactly where the $175K of grant money went.
The thing that really makes me wonder what the EPA is really doing here is this bit from the Tribune last week...
| Quote: | Turner said the plan wasn’t to focus on opening the park this year. “None of the work we have done has anything to do with the operating issue (for 2007) — it was long-term.”
However, once the new board is established, the EPA will work with the board to “get into the issue of whether we could or should open the park.” |
The one thing that's been proven by the closings of Whalom, Americana, Idora, Chippewa, Williams Grove, etc.....is that if the park closes for just one season the chances of it ever opening again are VERY slim. Taking a "year off" is not the way to turn things around.
a couple other key points from that same Tribune article...
| Quote: | Although the park had an agreement with Conneaut Concessions for the company to lease the Beach Club until this end of this year, that lease was terminated mutually, according to Stearns.
|
I'm guessing Stearns announcing in the press that the park planned on taking control of the Beach Club again next year had something to do with that...
| Quote: | “I am going to continue to do my job,” Deshner said, noting that if a new board’s decision is not to keep him, “it will be fine with me as well.”
At the same time, he said many people don’t understand the magnitude of CLP operations. “It’s very easy to criticize when you are not here on a day-to-day basis.”
Unfortunately, he said the small group of naysayers have created a lot of controversy. “I am here to do a job and will continue to do my job. I will wait and see what happens.”
|
Yes, there's been a lot of criticism aimed at park management over the past couple years but I think George has done a hell of a job with what he had (or hasn't had) to work with. Hopefully the new park board keeps him around. He seems to genuinely care about the park and it would nice to see what he could do as manager without $2 million in debt dragging him down. |
